On Thursday, Jon and I arrived at 66 Steep Hollow in Glastonbury, CT, after driving through the night from Chicago. For the past few days we have been unpacking and re-packing…and making and re-making various to-do lists. We have been visiting with friends and family, who we will greatly miss during our travels abroad. And, of course, we have been trying to drown ourselves in the comforts of home, amazing food, a comfortable bed, and hot showers, before we embark on our journey.
Four short days from now, Thursday, March 23, we will leave Bradley International Airport in Hartford on a 5 pm flight to Santiago, Chile, connecting through Toronto. We will be armed with only 1 backpack each (mine may be slightly more than 20 lbs) and a spinach pie. We will arrive in Santiago on Friday at 9AM, where we will spend a few days exploring the city before traveling south in Chile to the Lake District. Our plans are only loosely outlined until April 4/5, when we have a date to meet our friends Katie and Jim in Mendoza, Argentina, a famous wine region of South America.
Jon and I are excited to begin this journey, the plans for which we began on a return plane flight from Costa Rica in March of 2005. We feel unbelievably fortunate to have this opportunity before us and we owe a huge thank you to our friends and family for their help and support. Without their blessings, this trip would have been impossible. Thanks to my Aunt Nellie and Uncle Gene, Jon’s Auntie Jane, and our friends who have shared with us suggestions and contacts for our travels. We look forward to providing similar assistance to those that follow us—and we hope there are many!!

I will miss the 2 of you and I will pray for you. Please be careful. Don't forget the info I gave you. Have it with you always just in case. Love you, Auntie Jane
Watching the two of you plan and plow through your "To-Do" list this week has been an adventure. I hope the fruits of your labor will result in an exciting and safe trip. By the time we meet in The Galapagos, you'll be pros at living life in a foreign country. I have a feeling this site will be my home away from home. You will be every moment in my heart. Love, mom
Have the time of your lives. A word of advice I'm pretty sure you won't need: Don't get home sick (although it's inevitable). Even when you do, ignore it because once you get home you'll want to go back everyday until you get the chance to go back again.
Chicago won't me the same without you guys.
Brian D.
PS: I sat next to two 5th grade teachers in a coffee shop in Brooklyn that taught at KIPP. They were hilarious, so I couldn't help but student bash with them. We got to talking and one of them ended up being Dan's sister (as in Dan in Hanni). Crazy.
I'll be living vicariously through you via this site! I'm so excited for you -- be in touch and know that it is already not the same without you. We all strongly encourage that upon your return you come back to Sweet Home Chicago ;)
Cheers to your adventures and I look forward to hearing all about them!
All my love and best wishes,
Tressie
Dear Jon and Kristen, wishing you a wonderful adventure. Be safe and aware. Wish we could all go with you(well, maybe not hiking and backpacking but surely being "turistas")
Vaya con Dios,

There is no possible way I would ever be able to live out of a backpack....I could just see myslef embarking on a mission such as this one...Pounding up mountains in my Stilletos with the dogs pulling my makeup bag and screaming about not having a cellphone!!!

Muchisima suerte huevones!! Say hello to my beloved Santiago for me. If you're still there, go up the Cerro San Cristobal for the views and hit up Sarita Colonia in the Bellavista area for hip food/drinks and atmosphere. Just remember to drop all consonant sounds from your Spanish, and you'll be golden. I'm so excited for you!

Sounds like the trip has been amazing so far, with so much more to come. And it sounds like lots of visitors along the way! We will be in Peru April 13-24. Any news on your plan? Love, KL & Joe
Jon and Kristen,
we are definitely jealous of the wine experience that you will be having. the only unfortunate part is that you have to drink and run versus stockpile a cellar of experiences. Take good notes and we can discuss when you are back home. Safe travels. Aunt Mar and Barb
Hey, you guys! It's Robin, the slacker who never returned Kristen's goodbye call. (Sorry - I felt awful on Friday when I realized I had missed you.) The blog is COOL! I'm so proud of you for taking the time to find computers and share your trip with all of us. We already miss you and can't wait for August. It sounds like a perfect adventure so far. Keep posting! Have FUN! Love you bunches...Robin
